Description: As both a direct descendant of Roger Williams and a Certified Home Economist, Barbara Sherman Stetson combines unique qualifications as author of a cookbook incorporating the tastes, flavors, folklore, and history of Rhode Island and the nearby Islands. 

Much of her professional life has been invested in food and nutrition, beginning early with awards in national and regional foods contests and membership in the Future Farmers of America Hall of Fame. A graduate of the University of Rhode Island, she has held positions as an Extension Home Economist for the University of Rhode Island and as department chairman and 20-year Home Economics teacher in the Scituate schools. She is a Ford Foundation Achievement award winner and a Charles B. Pfizer award winner for extension programs. Barbara serves on the Nutrition Committee of the American Heart Association, the Rhode Island Cancer Society, the New England Home Economist in Business, and the Rhode Island Home Economics Association. 

She and her husband, Carl H. Stetson, Jr. established Stetson Laboratories, Inc., a foods testing, consulting and publication service. Carl has retired from the executive position to being "executive chef" in the testing division.
