Description: We are the folks at Native Harvest, a community based program on the White Earth Indian reservation in Northern Minnesota. We grow, harvest, and eat a lot of foods from our akiing, and want to keep these recipes and knowledge strong. We also want to use our language, and see that we don't walk away from this part of ourselves. In this cookbook we weave together our language and our foods.

We at Native Harvest have been proud to offer to our friends over the years, a line of foods that are special to our culture. We also launched a traditional foods program recently, called Mino-Miijim (good food). This program offers traditional Anishinaabeg foods to those in our community who suffer from diabetes. Our elders are increasingly diabetic; this disease is an epidemic in our community: half of our people over 40 years of age are afflicted, and it's steadily increasing among our youth. What we know is that our community's diet has changed dramatically, with less of our traditional foods on our plates and more processed foods.

Food is medicine. Gichi-Manidoo gave us these gifts, many of them with amazing stories of their arrival, and their lessons. We share some of this here along with our recipes for cooking our foods. That is how we share the medicine and the joy and gifts of our land. Miigwech for your support.
