Additional Details

Description: When you visit us here at Riegsecker Marketplace in Shipshewana, you are entering the world of master craftsman, Mel Riegsecker, a native of Northern Indiana Amish country.

Mel's father was an Amish harness-maker. While growing up, Mel learned every detail of this ethnic skill. Back in 1970, for his own enjoyment, he created a miniature wagon and six-horse hitch, with everything from manes to bridles authentically detailed in every way. Mel's father displayed the handsome miniature in his shop for all to enjoy. To the surprise of father and son, the miniature was quickly purchased!

Mel began to make more of the finely crafted horse and carriage miniatures, and they were sold as quickly as he could finish them. One day a buyer from Montgomery Ward's in Chicago discovered Mel's work, and the rest is history.

As Mel's reputation grew, he found that visitors really enjoyed watching the crafters in his workshop adjacent to his country home. So in 1984, Mel and his wife, June, purchased and renovated an old factory building, now the Shipshewana Craft Bam where visitors can watch as skilled artisans, including Mel, create the miniatures.
