Authors Dawn O'Brien and Claire Walter visited 50 restaurants located in historic buildings. Some of the restaurants, such as The Cameron Estate Inn in Mount Joy, once served as private residences. Others originally functioned as stagecoach stops, general stores, railroad stations, post offices, taverns or hotels.
While visiting the dining rooms and kitchens of each establishment, the authors learned many fascinating legends and stories. The ghosts of former owners and other spirits are said to inhabit Ye Olde Limeport Hotel, Red Rose Inn, Alfred's Victorian and Stokesay Castle.
Famous personalities in U.S. history once dined at several of the restaurants: the Head House Inn hosted many Revolutionary statesmen, and members of the Second Continental Congress frequently gathered for a dinner of steaming venison washed down with tankards of ale at The City Tavern in Philadelphia.
This book includes a pen-and-ink drawing of each restaurant, plus a few of each establishment's most tantalizing recipes. More than 150 are presented here, with clear, step-by-step instructions.
