Description: The serving of afternoon tea by members of the Ladies Committee is one of the activities of these volunteers most appreciated by our visitors. Especially those who come from afar have come to regard this as a typical Bostonian tradition, not realizing that it is -- by Boston standards—a relatively new one. It was initiated shortly after the founding of the Ladies Committee in 1956 and goes back, therefore, about twenty-five years.

With the reopening of the Evans Wing, the Ladies Committee contributed the funds to convert the former Fenway foyer into an attractive new and now permanent site to continue the gracious custom of serving tea and providing, at the same time, musical entertainment, often offered by young musicians..

After the great successes of the Museum's two cookbooks, which first appeared in 1970 and 1981, respectively, and which have been reprinted many times, it is fitting that the third cookbook in this series should address itself to tea and its many accompaniments. We hope that this book will generate a new interest in tea and all that comes with it, as well as the thrill of discovery of the many works of art in the Museum's great collections.
