Description: This delightful book offers a selection of simple farmhouse and country recipes of the sort that Beatrix Potter herself might have prepared when, at the age of 47, she became Mrs Heelis and went to live at Sawrey in Cumberland. Having had a sheltered upbringing, and existed, as far as can be ascertained, on a diet of mutton cutlets and rice pudding, it is not surprising that she records, not without humour, her early difficulties in fending for herself and her husband in the kitchen. Certainly she would not have lacked basic ingredients living as she did surrounded by an abundance of game, fish and the products of her own farm and garden.
Many of the recipes set out here have been selected by Margaret Lane from dishes (or their ingredients) referred to in Beatrix Potter's writings, although perhaps the Potter devotee might jib at the mention of Squirrel Stew and even tradition-loving Miss Potter might have preferred to leave this delicacy to the enjoyment of the Lake District foresters.
Margaret Lane has prepared or tasted most of these dishes herself, and the result is a splendid, simple country cookery book with superb illustrations which, if the reader will forgive the expression, retains all the genuine flavour of Beatrix Potter's world.
