Description: For decades, a rambling white wall and sprays of magenta-colored bougainvillea gently guarded one of Phoenix's best-kept secrets from the hustle and bustle of daily city life but once inside the walls of The Royal Palms Hotel, visitors were hard-pressed to leave the inns old-world charm, dramatic setting at the base of Camelback Mountain and it's lush landscaping, perfumed by citrus blossoms and anchored by towering palms proved mesmerizing to local residents and out-of-town visitors alike for many of The Royal Palms' guests, there simply was no other place to stay.

Though The Royal Palms opened it's doors to guests in 1948, The inn's history dates back further. The heart of the The Royal Palms is a Spanish Colonial-style mansion, built in the late 1920s as a winter retreat by New York financier and industrialist Delos Willard Cooke. The wings of the gracious, two-story home enclosed a lushly planted courtyard that Cooke and his family enjoyed during their long stays in Phoenix. Several other families owned the home before it was converted into a hotel with the initial addition of 15 Casitas.

The inn became the place to stay in the Arizona desert, and its cachet drew celebrities, politicians and power-players to vacation in its relaxing ambiance. It also became the place to dance, with well-known musical performers enticing couples to glide on the dance floor with graceful precision.

The Royal Palms, which now has 120 rooms, underwent a major renovation and restoration in 1996, bringing the property back to the genteel allure of the original mansion. A new restaurant, T. Cook's, was opened under the direction of chef Michael DeMaria, and has become a runaway success with its menu of rustic Mediterranean fare. Newcomers and Royal Palms regulars are still enraptured by the Royal Palms magic.
