Cock 'n Bull Cookbook

A Nostalgic Find from Hollywood's Past

Cookbook Village acquired and recently sold this hard-to-find collectible cookbook from the former Cock 'n Bull tavern on Sunset Strip in Hollywood, California. The restaurant closed down in 1987 after 50 years in business. The cookbook, The Cock 'n Bull's Cookery'n Libation Remembrancer was published in 1972. It is a paperback book with 57 pages.

After quite a bit of research and social media posts requesting background on the cookbook, we still couldn't find another like it. Published in the early 70's, we assume there must be others out there on the Web. Rare or not rare, given the tavern's legendary status among Angelinos, we figured this nostalgic restaurant cookbook should definitely hold a spot in our Cookbook Village buzz and news pages before we post it for sale. The owner "Jack" Morgan is tied to the development of the famous Moscow Mule cocktail.

The Cock 'n Bull's Cookery'n Libation Remembrancer is a humorous cookbook with some interesting recipes from the restaurant -- The Welshman's Rabbit, The Proud Cornish Pasty, Mr. Humble's Curry, Trifle Pudding Balmorol, and several cocktail recipes, among others.

At first glance this cookbook appears to be from a British pub in London. Illustrations of old English landmarks fill the pages, though the title page gives the real restaurant's identify away. It states the location of the publisher as being: "Situated in the region of Sunset-Upon-The-Strip Close by the Hamlet of Hollywood." In addition to that, we have seen the restaurant's famous Welshman's Rabbit dish in another cookbook and found it here inside this cookbook.

We love to unravel a good mystery! It's half the fun of collecting cookbooks.
