Description: From a midnight cab-yard kitchen on the streets of San Francisco to the makeshift kitchens crammed in the racing pits of NASCAR, hidden kitchens are everywhere. This collection of stories inspired by the NPR Morning Edition series follows The Kitchen Sisters as they cross the country in search of hidden, secret, and long-lost kitchens. 

As part of the Hidden Kitchens project, The Kitchen Sisters opened up an NPR hotline and asked listeners, "What food traditions are disappearing from your life? Who glues your community together through food? What should be captured and documented before it disappears or changes beyond recognition?" 

The response was overwhelming. Hundreds of listeners called sharing their stories, memories, and hot tips. Many of these funny, passionate, and poignant messages are featured here, along with recipes, photographs, and illustrations bringing to life hidden kitchens from around the United States. 

From freighter food cooked in the galleys of ships plying the Great Lakes to Burgoo simmering over an all-night fire pit in Kentucky to a secret civil rights kitchen in Montgomery, Alabama, The Kitchen Sisters chronicle a true treasury of Americana.
