Chef Julia Child was born on August 15, 1912 in Southern California. In honor of one of the best chefs of all time, we are sharing some photos of her from our archive.
Cookbook Village received some wonderful photos of Julia Child from one of our favorite customers, Chef Leon Roberge. The package contained an archive of personal photos from Roberge with many top chefs and restaurateurs of our time including Julia Child, Martin Yan, Paul Prudhomme, Anthony Athanas, Justin Wilson, and more. Here are a few of our favorites Julia from the photo archive.

]]>Cookbook Village recently contributed to an article about building a Shopify Facebook store. The article by buildthis.io includes an excerpt on Cookbook Village. It got us thinking about our social media pages on Facebook, Pinterest, and Twitter, and most recently Instagram. We often post interesting updates across these sites and would love to get more of our fans following and connecting with us there, but realize we haven't spread the word to you about where you can find us beyond our web store.
Here are the links to find us across social media sites. Enjoy following and sharing our content. We have some great shareable photos there, updates on chefs' birthdays, and more. We also have a great newsletter update that discusses recent cookbook inventory we post to the site and popular cookbooks that were previously sold out and that are back in stock.
Cookbook Village has been working behind the scenes the past several months to redesign our website. Our original site, that many of you knew and loved, was built in late 2010. We have long wanted to update it ... and now it's live!
We are excited to bring you several new features to make your collectible cookbook shopping an even better experience than before. We hope you will take a look at the new store now!
Our web address remains the same, as do our detailed descriptions and photographs. Our trusted platform and partner Shopify is still ensuring we are up and running and powering the site and checkout, as they did in the past. We have tried to make the transition as comfortable as possible for those of you who regularly shop in our store.
Read on further below to see the great new features!

]]>Cookbook Village recently spotted a nice article from Nancy Stohs, Food Editor of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that shared our tips on cookbook collecting. The article, "What to do with your old cookbooks," noted some advice from the Cookbook Village webstore blog about selling cookbooks.
We were very flattered to see some Cookbook Village tips on selling cookbook collections referenced in the article. Though our store sells cookbooks and doesn't buy in or sell customer collections, we do pride ourselves on the helpful information we provide store customers and the community on collecting. We are pleased to see our suggestions and tips go to good use.
We want to thank Nancy Stoh and the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel for the mention of Cookbook Village in their article! It's great to see the recent escalation of coverage on the topic of cookbook collecting -- proof that in this age of digital recipes, the printed cookbook is something still cherished by so many cooks, culinary professionals, and Cookbook Village customers.
]]>Cookbook Village recently held a cookbook giveaway on its site. Our prize winner Joanie Harmon contacted us soon after learning about her prize. We learned Joanie was not only a cookbook collector, but was a food culture writer with a blog titled "Girl Meets Soup." She collects cookbooks related to recipes with specific ingredients like Campbell's Soup or Bacardi Rum. She also enjoys cookbooks for kids like the ever popular collectible "Peanuts Cook Book," and another cookbook titled "Sandwichery."
Joanie was inspired to write an article about cookbook collecting from her prize set of TV show themed cookbooks including books from shows like "Friends," "Sopranos," "Gilligan's Island," and "Desperate Housewives." She reached out to us with some interesting questions on collecting and posted this insightful article on "Girl Meets Soup" this week. We enjoyed it so much, we wanted to share it here with our audience and customers.

]]>Longtime collectibles and antique columnist Larry Cox contributes a special collectibles column for the Arizona Republic website azcentral.com. His column answers readers' questions about antiques and collectibles.
This morning we opened the Cookbook Village inbox to find some very interesting requests for searches and information for some unique vintage cookbooks. Each email to us mentioned "today's Larry Cox column in the Arizona Republic website." Sure enough, we visited the site and were pleased to see that Cookbook Village was mentioned in a section of the article on whether or not vintage cookbooks have monetary value. Cox noted some price ranges that were definitely in line with many secondhand cookbooks and went on to note Cookbook Village as a good resource for learning about current values.
We want to thank Larry and the Arizona Republic for the nice mention of our online store! We are happy to see some media coverage on vintage and collectible cookbooks -- a hobby that's near and dear to us ... and to many Cookbook Village customers.

]]>Cookbook Village acquired and recently sold this hard-to-find collectible cookbook from the former Cock 'n Bull tavern on Sunset Strip in Hollywood, California. The restaurant closed down in 1987 after 50 years in business. The cookbook, The Cock 'n Bull's Cookery'n Libation Remembrancer was published in 1972. It is a paperback book with 57 pages.
After quite a bit of research and social media posts requesting background on the cookbook, we still couldn't find another like it. Published in the early 70's, we assume there must be others out there on the Web. Rare or not rare, given the tavern's legendary status among Angelinos, we figured this nostalgic restaurant cookbook should definitely hold a spot in our Cookbook Village buzz and news pages before we post it for sale. The owner "Jack" Morgan is tied to the development of the famous Moscow Mule cocktail.
The Cock 'n Bull's Cookery'n Libation Remembrancer is a humorous cookbook with some interesting recipes from the restaurant -- The Welshman's Rabbit, The Proud Cornish Pasty, Mr. Humble's Curry, Trifle Pudding Balmorol, and several cocktail recipes, among others.
At first glance this cookbook appears to be from a British pub in London. Illustrations of old English landmarks fill the pages, though the title page gives the real restaurant's identify away. It states the location of the publisher as being: "Situated in the region of Sunset-Upon-The-Strip Close by the Hamlet of Hollywood." In addition to that, we have seen the restaurant's famous Welshman's Rabbit dish in another cookbook and found it here inside this cookbook.
We love to unravel a good mystery! It's half the fun of collecting cookbooks.
Format: Paperback, 57 pages.

]]>Recognize this vintage cookbook? Well ... not really vintage per se, but this is an early Mario Batali cookbook from 1998 called Simple Italian Food. When we heard Mario Batali's birthday is today (September 19th), we dug through our archives as we remember selling this cookbook back in the early days of our company. Indeed, we made someone's day with a $5.99 price tag for one of the first cookbooks we ever sold at our eBay store. Anyway, we couldn't let the day pass without honoring the birthday of one of the world's top celebrity chefs. "Happy Birthday Mario" from Cookbook Village.

Cookbook fans that haven't used Pinterest yet are missing out on something great. Cookbook Village joined a few months back and are loving this social network. Facebook is fun for sharing recipe, food and cookbook posts and catching up with old friends. Twitter is catchy and for many, addicting. But ... Pinterest has stolen our hearts. Each Pinner has their own interpretation of what the site is and does. We liken it to an online community scrapbooking site where members can pin images and videos from things they see online or from their own photo archives.
Foodies, cooks and creative people will enjoy sharing and viewing ideas for their kitchen, recipes, seeing recommendations in pin comments (pins are the images and videos you post) and of course, spotting those beloved cookbooks from your childhood or memorable event. Since joining we have received several comments about the memories brought back to some of our followers through our vintage cookbook pins.
Cookbook Village has 18 boards (the collections of pins) and 188 pins at the time of writing this article, and our addiction is growing. We are generating a visual archive of cookbooks in a variety of themes from TV Show Cookbooks to Cookbooks That Inspire Travel and Signed Cookbooks (with signature samples from Top Chefs and cookbook authors). We also have some Boards on Favorite Restaurants in a variety of cities, plus some of our favorite kitchen gadgets like our coveted Nespresso machine.
We felt compelled to write about this great site and to formally ask our online store customers and readers to Follow Cookbook Village on Pinterest. It doesn't cost anything to use it. It's easy. And, it's therapeutic, too! Here's a snapshot of our Vintage Cookbooks Board on Pinterest. We couldn't capture it all in one image, but you get the idea. Make sure to follow us or your favorite boards on our page.
]]>Please send us an email via our contact form expressing interest in participating in an interview. We are excited to share tips from some of our store customers and readers with other cookbook fans.
]]>Cookbook Village was interviewed by online trust seal business KikScore as part of their small business interview series. We feel customer service is at the root of success with our business. Our used cookbooks online store takes the same hands-on approach with customers as a brick-and-mortar bookstore.
We appreciate feedback from our customers and implemented the trust seal not only to communicate things like our KikReport with information on policies, management, security of payment processing, but also to offer customers a confidential way to communicate their feedback on us. The KikScore badge was only recently implemented so we hope to see our score grow as customers add additional feedback and our business grows.
The KikScore badge has been a blessing. We have been long time sellers on eBay with over 2,100 positive feedbacks (100% positive). Unfortunately most of our Cookbook Village visitors are not familiar with us because we can't promote the store through eBay. This means we are essentially starting over as a business. The KikScore badge is a great way for us to begin earning trust with our new customers. We have already seen a difference in sales since adding the badge and even received two customer feedbacks in the first 24 hours of launching it.
We recommend KikScore for ecommerce business. We use the Shopify platform which allowed us to easily connect the KikScore platform to our site. Shopify and other cart owners should definitely try KikScore out.
Signed cookbooks are a popular category on Cookbook Village's vintage and used cookbooks online store. We are constantly adding these collectible cookbooks to our inventory so make sure to check back for autographed books from your favorite chefs. Following is a snapshot of some of the recent signatures we've posted for purchase.
Cookbook Village just posted a collectibility review of its highest valued cookbook of 2011. Autographed by legendary singer Johnny Mathis, this Cooking for You Alone cookbook was our top cookbook sold during the past year. A collectible even unsigned, fans and collectors search for this recipe book online year after year. It is considered scarce and is sought after by collectors around the country. Some have noted searching for it for years.
Find out how it scored in our collectibility rating system and its prospects for future investment. See the Cookbook Village collectibility review of the Johnny Mathis Cooking for You Alone cookbook.
Our continued series of articles on signed cookbooks now includes the 5 Most Creative Chef Signatures from the Cookbook Village collection. We cover the signatures that reflect the true creativity and originality of each of the chefs that made our list. Some are from signed cookbooks of chefs of the past, others are contemporary. These culinary legends each have a signature style that is stands out from the rest with caricatures and drawings that make them a true artist.

]]>Cookbook Village just posted a mouth-watering chocolate lovers' recipe. Beware... it's dangerous. The Chocolate Almond Bark with Sea Salt recipe was contributed to us courtesy of Lori Curie, the recipe's developer and publisher of Lori's Favorite Things Food and Recipes Blog. Lori has some wonderful tips and we are excited to share this recipe. We've tasted it first hand and positively delicious.
Trader Joe's shoppers will appreciate it even more as its suggested ingredients come from the popular food store. Of course, if you are unable to visit a Trader Joe's, check online as you may be able to locate the same brands. Otherwise there are substitutes which could be made for the almond and chocolate suggestions.
Visit Cookbook Village Collecting & Reviews blog here to get the recipe.
]]>Cookbook Village's blog, Cookbook Collecting and Reviews, has long been a go-to resource for collectors researching values, investment outlooks and reviews of used and vintage cookbooks. Our collectibility reviews provide information relevant to a cookbook's value, its investment worthiness and its "collectibility." Past articles have range from books including Betty Crocker's "Red Pie" Cookbook to Marlboro's Cookbook, "Towns, Trails and Special Times."
Our rating system is described in Cookbook Collectibility Ratings. The final scores do not necessarily indicate whether a book is interesting, beautiful or has great recipes. Instead, it attempts to project the future value and whether or not to hold on to something for investment purposes. Some people find it a good way to understand if they have a valuable collectible on their hands.
If you have a collection and are interested in understanding more about a particular book's value, take a look at our blog. We do also have a library of articles on author or chef signatures so you can compare yours against them. Sometimes it can be difficult to distinguish a hand signed page to a printed signature. We are continuing to grow the archive. There are also many signatures in our Flickr gallery.
]]>Cookbook Village just posted a rarer edition of Julia Child's famous Mastering the Art of French Cooking cookbook. From 1961, the Book Club Edition is highly sought after and has a higher value than the "regular" edition. With black and white title and stamp, smaller physical dimensions than the regular version, this vintage cookbook (Book Club Edition) is much harder to find as well which makes it more interesting for cookbook collectors. The item we posted does include its dust jacket as well.
]]>Today as I Googled Cookbook Village online to see if word of our new store was getting out, I was surprised to see dozens of links popping up. While our Cookbook Collecting and Reviews blog and popular eBay cookbooks site have been active for years, the new Cookbook Village, online vintage and used cookbooks store is newly opened. We were absolutely thrilled when we spotted the headline "Cookbook Village is there to feed a habit" on the Los Angeles Times food blog, the "Daily Dish." What a lovely article and how excited we are that the Times featured us in their blog!
